A 27-YEAR-OLD man was charged in the Lae committal court on Wednesday with raping a 10-year-old girl in 2018.
Magistrate Pious Tapil read out the charges to Samuel Joshua, from Tewai Siassi’s Tarawe village in Morobe, and remanded him in Buimo Prison.
Tapil advised Joshua to submit his bail application as the charges were serious.
“On sexual offence against minors, this court will need a proper bail application to decide on your bail,” he added.
Police alleged that Joshua on June 9, 2018, between 6pm and 7pm, raped the then 10-year-old girl in their village.
The court was told that Joshua, during the time of committing the offence, was under the influence of alcohol.
Police said Joshua allegedly confronted the girl when she was about to take a flight of steps to her house when she was dragged and carried away some 100m into the bush watched in horror by the girl’s aunt.
The court heard that Joshua also used a pocket knife to threaten the girl and cover her mouth with his other hand when forcing her into the bush.
The court was told that after allegedly raping the girl, Joshua threatened her and left.
The girl was sent to Lablab Health Centre the next day and was confirmed to have been raped.
Joshua was arrested by police but later released and the same incident was reported at the rural command headquarter in Lae recently until Joshua was arrested last Friday at Voco Point in Lae.
Joshua will appear for mention in the same court on Dec 13.
