A PRISONER was killed and five others injured after soldiers and warders
rescued a prison commander being held hostage by inmates after he foiled their
attempted breakout.
Buebi Prison commanding officer Supt Samson Kisa in Imbonggu, Southern
Highlands, was held hostage after he foiled an attempted breakout by 10 inmates
on Thursday morning.
Prison officers and soldiers rescued him and in the process a prisoner was
killed and another five injured.
Kisa and warders were doing their usual morning check in the prison compound
when they came upon the attempted breakout.
Nearby in Chimbu, 23 people on remand broke out of the Barawagi Prison between
10pm and 11pm on Thursday.
Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis told The National that
from the two incidents, one prisoner was dead, 26 were now on the run and two
recaptured.
Pokanis said at Buebi, when word reached warders that several prisoners were
holding Kisa and another staff inside the prison, support was called for and a
rescue operation was conducted.
“It occurred during the usual morning visits by the commanding officer and his
officers to talk to (inmates),” he said.
“During the rescue, one prisoner was killed and another five injured.”
The five injured prisoners were taken to the Mendi General Hospital for
treatment.
Pokanis told The National later that reports from the Mendi
General Hospital confirmed that the five prisoners were forcefully taken away
by their relatives “in the presence of a doctor and nurses on duty”.
“Prisoners holding the prison commander and his senior officer have reasons to
do so and which, unfortunately, they themselves know,” he said.
“Holding an officer hostage is not new; this incident could be the third
attempt in the history of the Correctional Services.”
