A POLICEMAN who allegedly sold a police-issued pump action shot gun to another man in East New Britain two years ago has been arrested and charged.
Acting provincial police commander Chief Inspector Gabriel Bandy said First Constable Ben Thomas, from East Sepik, was charged with stealing last week.
Francis Paraide, 26, from Ratongor in the Reimber-Livuan local level government, who allegedly bought the firearm from Thomas was also arrested and charged with being in possession of stolen property and in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Both men have been detained at the Kokopo Police Station cell and are expected to appear at the Kerevat District Court this week.
Bandy said Thomas was also suspended for 21 days.
He said Thomas was based at the Kerevat Police Station when he allegedly committed the offence between October and November in 2019.
Bandy said while working at the Kerevat Police Station, Thomas allegedly stole the pump action shot gun (serial number L413129) and then allegedly sold the firearm to Paraide.
“Investigations were carried out when the firearm went missing and later found out about the firearm and the second suspect (Paraide) was brought into the station and questioned,” he said.
Bandi said Paraide admitted buying the firearm from the policeman.
