70-year-old ‘animalistic’ grandpa to stand trial for allegedly molesting four-year-old granddaughter

PORT MORESBY: Magistrate Paul Nii described a 70-year-old man who allegedly sexually abused his four-year-old granddaughter as “animalistic”.

“Allowing a minor to watch a pornographic video is regarded animalistic as in this case, your act is way below the behaviour of animals,” he said.

Nii then committed the grandfather to stand trial in the National Court on Monday (Jan 31, 2022) for allegedly abusing his granddaughter.

MAGISTRATE Paul Nii described a 70-year-old man who allegedly sexually abused his four-year-old granddaughter as “animalistic”.
“Allowing a minor to watch a pornographic video is regarded animalistic as in this case, your act is way below the behaviour of animals,” he said.
Magistrate Nii then committed the grandfather to stand trial in the National Court on Monday for allegedly abusing his granddaughter.
Magistrate Nii said he was satisfied that the evidence was sufficient to commit the grandfather.
“Your state of mind was polluted with evil and unethical behaviours when you allowed an innocent and fresh mind to watch pornographic videos,” he said.
The grandfather was alleged to have allowed his granddaughter to watch the video clips in his phone while he sexually abused her (using his fingers).
It was alleged that on Oct 20, 2020, in Gerehu Stage 1, the grandfather was alone in the house with the victim when he showed her the pornographic videos and sexually abused her.
The next day, the girl complained to her parents that she felt pain in her private part.
When asked, she told her parents what her grandfather had done to her and that he had done it several times.
The parents then rushed their daughter to Gerehu Hospital and later reported the matter to police.
The grandfather was arrested on Nov 18, 2020, and charged with persistent sexual abuse.
Magstrate Nii said the grandfather denied the charge and claimed the allegations were false but “I have considered the testimony of the girl who remembers (the attacks)”.
Magistrate Nii, in refusing to accept the grandfather’s arguments, told him that: “You said you would not do such things to your own flesh and blood but why would the parents, who are also your flesh and blood, make false allegations against you?
“This is something for the court to question”.
