Giligili Prison on high alert
PORT MORESBY: Alotau’s Giligili Prison is on high alert following
intelligence reports that a breakout is being planned for the 20 Tommy Baker
gang members held there, prison commander Chief Superintendent Ray Gideon says.
“We have been alerted that the 30 armed remnants of
the gang (led by Eugene Pakalasi) are planning a breakout for their
accomplices.
And Police Commissioner David Manning has advised remnants
of the gang to surrender.
“Papua New Guineans have had enough of this behaviour,
and if the gangsters think they are being accepted wholeheartedly by
communities in Milne Bay, they are gravely mistaken,” he added.
The news breaks were published by The National:

ALOTAU’s Giligili Prison is on high alert following intelligence reports
that a breakout is being planned for the 20 Tommy Baker gang members held
there, a prison official says.
Prison commander Chief Superintendent Ray Gideon said: “We have been alerted
that the 30 armed remnants of the gang (led by Eugene Pakalasi) are planning a
breakout for their accomplices.”
He told The National that the intelligence reports were being taken seriously
and “we have stepped up security”.
The prison is located near Maiwara village where Pakalasi is from.
Chief Supt Gideon said they had received reports of potential targets by the
gang since the shooting of Baker last Thursday by police.
“The security checks are ongoing and I am echoing Baker’s parents to call to
Pakalasi and his accomplices to surrender to police,” he said.
“I have also spoken to the prisoners that escaping (will force them) to be on the
run for the rest of their lives.
“Serving their time and staying behind bars is better than going out to be with
the wrong crowd.”
Police Commissioner David Manning told The National that the
ongoing threats were being treated seriously by police.
“An investigation team and additional police resources and manpower will be
dispatched to address the situation in Alotau,” he said.
“The investigation is to ascertain the full facts in the moments leading up to,
during and after the shooting.”
“The additional manpower is to assist those on the ground to ensure peace and
safety for Alotau residents.
“I have made a call for the surrender of remnants of the Baker gangsters.
“But if they ignore it, policemen are allowed to use any means to protect
themselves and properties.”

POLICE Commissioner David Manning has
advised remnants of the Tommy Baker Gang, now led by Eugene Pakalasi, to
surrender.
“Surrendering is the only peaceful resolution for them,” he said.
“I support Tommy Maeva Baker’s parents’ plea to the remnants of their late
son’s gang to surrender to police in Alotau.
“I also respect the desire of his (Tommy’s) parents to take possession of their
son’s remains to lay him to rest in accordance with their faith and cultural
traditions.
“This will happen when the full process of the investigation is completed and
the remains are no longer required as part of the investigation.” Describing
the shooting as “unfortunate yet avoidable”, Manning said: “It is not the wish
of any parent to outlive their children.
“I have time and time again warned criminals who prey on the innocent by acts
of violence that a similar fate awaits them, should they not make the decision
to surrender and allow the law to take its course.
“Policemen have the authority to use any means necessary to protect life and
property and this include their own.”
Manning said the onus was very much on the remaining gang members to choose
what was right by law and society’s expectations, rather than continue with
this criminal behaviour. “Papua New Guineans have had enough of this behaviour,
and if the gang to think they are being accepted wholeheartedly by the
communities in Milne Bay, they are gravely mistaken,” Manning added.
“I have directed an investigation to be conducted, as required by law in any
shooting, into the that of Tommy Baker.”
