A SENIOR police officer has urged warring tribes in the Highlands region to surrender their guns which he described as Satan’s weapons, and allow peace to prevail.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Highlands Eastern End commander Joseph Tondop said tribal fights only led to pain, misery and affected services.
“Once you get rid of (the guns), you will find peace and happiness,” he said.
“(The gun) is (Satan’s) weapon to destroy the people of God.
“Warring tribes and groups should do away with them.”
Tondop made the remarks on Sunday at Gumanch village in Dei district, Western Highlands, after witnessing a crusade organised by the Rolgoka tribe expressing remorse for a fight with the Kimka tribe over a coffee plantation since 2019.
More than 50 people were killed and properties belonging to both tribes destroyed.
Last week, the Rolgoka tribesmen decided to stop the fighting and commit themselves to God, to ensure that peace and normalcy are restored.
Tondop welcomed the initiative, saying schools and health services at Mun and Gumanch were being affected by the fighting.
