TWO men are dead after attempts to loot shops in two Highlands provinces over the weekend and on Monday morning.
Shops were looted in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands and Aitape in West Sepik. EHP provincial police commander Supt Michael Welly told The National that extra manpower had been sent to Kainantu to assist officers on the ground.
At about 8.30am on Monday, police were called to contain a crowd congregated in Kainantu who later tried to force open a shop.
“Police took positions in front of Papindo to (ward) off any looters.
“The crowd (moved) from the temporary market toward Papindo when police fired a warning shot.”
He said as the crowds dispersed, two shots were heard from a different direction.
They found out that two men shot died instantly.
He has instructed the Kainantu police station commander to keep in safe custody the police gun used during the incident.
“I cannot confirm whether my men or someone from another vehicle parked near the crowd was responsible (for the fatal shooting).”
