ONE woman and two men were killed in a fight between villagers and settlers in Kavieng, New Ireland.
The woman from Panapai and the two men from the Pawa Haus compound died and another man from Djaul Island had his ear cut off.
He is being treated at the Kavieng General Hospital.
Provincial police commander Chief Insp Moses Itoro told The National that the fight started after the home of a former senior police officer at Maiom village was broken into by five men who held up Graham Ainui and wife Lyn and took Lyn’s vehicle.
“The vehicle was heading into Namatanai for a planned robbery at a logging company when it ran out of fuel at Lemakot on Friday night.”
The five men set fire to the vehicle, went to the health centre, held up the residents and took the ambulance.
They returned to Kavieng and abandoned the vehicle at Wafi Camp.
Villagers of Maiom, Kaselok, Putput and Kaut went to Pawa Haus Compound and a fight erupted between the villagers and the compound residents.
“Three people were killed, and homes at Kaselok, Pawa Haus and Wafi Camp were burned down,” Chief Insp Itoro said.
“Five suspects ran away, however, police know who they are as they were also wanted for robbery.”
