THE owner of TBT Super Market in Takubar was shot dead in the head during a robbery on Monday.
East New Britain commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali said 10 men, armed with two homemade guns and other weapons like bush knives, stormed the shop at about 8.30am and held up workers and the Asian owner-manager, Weng Zugu, 58.
“The robbers harassed the workers and when Weng tried to stop them, he was shot in the head and died instantly,” he said.
The robbers fled with a cash register containing K1,000, a box containing K500 in coins and cigarettes worth K1,500.
Chief Insp Tabali said the robbers escaped in a waiting vehicle which was found in Gelegele resettlement the same afternoon.
“The driver of the hired vehicle was arrested and held in the Kokopo police lock-up,” he said.
“The vehicle was a hire vehicle the criminals hired for their movement,” he said, adding that police was confident of arresting the robbers.
Meanwhile, Asian businessmen in ENB will shut down all their stores and shops today in respect and honour of the passing away of Weng, who is from China’s Fujian city.
China and PNG Friendship Association president for Rabaul Chapter Irene Seeto said: “It was a horrific, senseless and sickening thing that should never have happened.
“As a result of the killing, all Chinese now feel threatened, unprotected and uncertain about the future.
“On behalf of the Chinese community in ENB, we also strongly appeal to the police to carry out prompt investigations and arrest all suspects involved in the murder.”
In response, Chief Insp Tabali assured the Chinese community that police would get to the bottom of the robbery and murder, and work round the clock to make arrests.
“I appeal to locals to report to the police if they have any information on the suspects and their whereabouts.”
