Cops nab 36 for murder in tribal war

PORT MORESBY: Police in East New Britain (ENB) have arrested 36 suspects in connection with the killing of a 54-year-old man during a tribal attack on Monday (March 15, 2021).

ENB commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali said police were looking for at least 24 more suspects who were in hiding and on the run.

POLICE in East New Britain have arrested 36 suspects in connection with the killing of a 54-year-old man on Monday.
ENB police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali said Paul Kalama, from Kapanakapiaka section of Kabaira ward, was killed by a mob of about 60 men who went into a rampage in Kapanakapiaka damaging seven houses, cutting down cocoa and betel nut trees, destroying garden food crops such as banana.
“The attack occurred between noon and 1pm in Kabaira ward, Reimber-Livuan local level government (LLG), Gazelle,” he said.
“The villagers could not defend themselves because they were outnumbered by the rampaging mob.
“Kalama was instantly killed by the mob armed with bush knives, stones and sling shots,” Chief Insp Tabali said, adding that the body was now in the Nonga Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
He said Kerevat police went to the crime scene the next day but all the suspects had fled.
“Police went back to the crime scene on Tuesday and managed to arrest 36 suspects while the other 24 were still at large,” he said.
“We have yet to establish the reason for the attack and killing.
“The situation in Kaibara is still tense and police are monitoring it.”
