THE police-issued K1A1 rifle that was seized from the three wanted men who were shot dead in a gun battle with cops was used in several crimes, including the K20,000 store robbery in Saidor last year.
The rife was lost on Dec 12, 2017, after a Madang police task force vehicle was swept away by flood waters in Tapo.
One policeman went missing and another was seriously injured.
Madang police commander Supt Mazu Rubiang said: “I am very pleased with the police informants in Wewak for supplying Madang police with the information on the case linked with the missing rifle.
“The rifle fell into the hands of criminals and was used in several crimes, including the biggest robbery in Saidor.
“The rifle and a modified 303 rifle were used in Madang by wanted criminals to commit many serious crimes in the province. I am happy that they are gone now.
“I believe they were planning something big in Wewak.
“I want to thank the informants for a job well done, and probably prevented a major robbery in the making.”
Last Wednesday, Madang police and mobile squad of 6 men, after receiving information on the three wanted criminals and the vehicle they were travelling in, set up a roadblock along the Wewak-Maprik part of the Sepik Highway.
“At about 5.30am, the suspects were sighted in the vehicle in Yangoru’s Boem Sara and police tried to stop them,” he said. “The vehicle was on very high speed and crashed through the roadblock.”
