Cop killed after councillor ordered execution of suspected sorcerers

PORT MORESBY: An auxiliary policeman was killed after a councillor ordered villagers to execute suspected sorcerers in Western last week.

The 22-year-old son of the policeman then stabbed a 37-year-old man in the ribs, in retaliation for his father’s death.

Daru police station commander Insp Soiwa Ricker said the man was now in critical condition.

Police have arrested six suspects, including the policeman’s son, in connection with the sorcery violence.

A MAN accused of sorcery is in a critical condition after he was attacked by a group of men who had been told by a councillor to kill suspected sorcerers in Western, a senior police officer says.
Daru Police Station commander Insp Soiwa Ricker said the 37-year-old victim was stabbed in the ribs after being accused of causing the death of an auxiliary policeman at Eniyawa village in South Fly.
Insp Ricker said the 22-year-old son of the deceased allegedly knifed the man after the councillor told villagers during a meeting to kill suspected sorcerers.
The victim was admitted to the Suki Health Centre in a critical condition while six suspects, including the son of the deceased, are currently in custody at Nakaku Police Station.
Insp Ricker said yesterday that the late auxiliary police man had died of unknown causes a month ago.
“After his death, the councillor had a meeting in the village and told them to kill suspected sorcerers,” he said. “Last week, the son of the deceased called the victim who lived across the Suki River to meet him.
“The victim then got into his canoe and paddled across to the opposite bank to meet the son and the other suspects.
“After the victim moored his canoe, the son began to question him over the death of his father and stabbed him in his ribs.”
Insp Ricker said other villagers intervened and rushed the victim to the health centre.
A lone policeman at Nakaku government station then went to the village and arrested the suspects who are expected to be transferred to Daru Police Station this week.
