POLICE Minister William Onglo and Police Commissioner David Manning say the offer to Papua New Guinea’s most wanted notorious criminal Tommy Maeva Baker to surrender still stands.
“We are prepared to meet with Baker and his associates at a middle ground for them to surrender,” Comm Manning said.
“Operations will continue until such time we come to a conclusion on the police investigations.
“The police force refuses to stand on the sideline and watch the people of Milne Bay become victims.
“The (manhunt) operations will continue (indefinitely) in the province as long as required.
“We continue to do everything possible to ensure the safety of the people of the province.
“I made it my business when I visited Alotau with DCP (Operations) Donald Yamasombi to make the call for his (Baker) surrender.”
He said the police’s focus was on the Milne Bay people and that the province returned to being relatively safe and secure.
Two weeks ago, police confirmed the death of Michael “Mekere” Yawi who was known as the “operations commander” of the Baker gang.
He along with 13 others engaged police in a shootout resulting in his death along with six others, while another seven managed to escape in the Makamaka local level government, Alotau.
To date, police have captured or shot dead a total of 74 suspected Baker gang members since the gang attacked the police in Alotau and petrol-bombed the water police water barracks on April 29 and 30.
The attack triggered a 60-day manhunt for the suspects.
