A DOCTOR and five nurses who recently died from the Coronavirus
(Covid-19) had not been vaccinated, according to the Controller of the PNG
Covid-19 National Pandemic Response David Manning.
He told The National that the doctor from Western and the four
nurses from Eastern Highlands had contracted the Covid-19 and died in the past
two weeks.
“All five health workers had not been vaccinated, and were serving the people
at the time they became ill,” he said.
“Tests were conducted and it was found that they had contracted the virus.
“We were advised they had not been vaccinated.”
The doctor was medically evacuated to Port Moresby from Daru last Tuesday.
She had suffered severe distress and succumbed to the disease last weekend.
“I want to again urge all health care workers across the country to get tested,
know your status and get vaccinated.
“You are important to the country, and you must protect yourself,” Manning
said.
Of the 19,000-plus confirmed cases of the Covid-19 recorded so far around the
country, 1,705 are health workers – around 9 per cent of the total confirmed
cases.
As of Tuesday Sept 21, 10,201 health workers had received one dose of the
vaccine, and 3,405 fully vaccinated.
The total number of people vaccinated is 179,845.
Delta cases recorded so far is 30.
“I am pleased many are moving towards getting vaccinated,” Manning said.
