‘Drunk’ cop in court for escape of police detainees in Lae
PORT MORESBY: A policeman was committed to stand trial in the
National Court for permitting detainees to escape from the Lae Central police
station lockup last year.
Ryan Kario, 27, allegedly committed the offence under
the influence of alcohol.

A POLICEMAN has been committed to
stand trial in the National Court on a charge of wilfully permitting prisoners
to escape from lawful custody.
Ryan Karlo, 27, of Onamuga village, Kainantu in Eastern Highlands will appear
at the National Court in Lae on Oct 1.
Police prosecutor Chief Sgt Gallus Gumbaia told District Court Magistrate Pious
Tapil that Karlo had allegedly breached the police code of conduct.
He said Karlo was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the incident
happened at the Lae Central police station cell block last September. Police
alleged that between Sept 1 and 2, 2020, Karlo was under the influence of
alcohol while performing his duty keeping watch at the cell block.
The court was told that he was seen consuming alcohol during his working hours
and after his shift ended.
He was seen telling stories with the juvenile prisoners into the early hours of
Sept 2, 2020.
Karlo did not return the keys to the duty guard after he fell asleep.
The cell gates were opened by the inmates allowing 30 to escape from custody in
the early hours of Sept 2.
He is on a K1,500 bail.
