A 23-YEAR-OLD taxi driver charged with raping an 11-year-old girl was granted bail by the Waigani committal court yesterday.
Magistrate Garry Unjo granted K1,000 bail to John Kewa, from Mt Hagen’s Komkui village, after prosecutor Sgt Sandra Holland did not object to the bail application.
Kewa’s lawyer from the office of the public solicitor submitted that Kewa should be granted bail since he was the only breadwinner to his widowed mother living with his siblings in Mt Hagen and that he might lose his business properties he recently established.
Unjo then imposed strict bail conditions and ordered Kewa to:

  • NOT interfere with state witnesses; and,
  • NOT to leave the National Capital District without leave of the court.

Kewa is also to report to the registry every two weeks on Mondays.
The court heard that on June 22, at about 3pm, Kewa picked up the grade four girl at Philip’s Primary School to send her back to Keasu settlement.
Both Kewa and the girl reside in Keasu settlement.
It was alleged that he took the girl to 2-4 (two-four) market and bought some food and drove off to Tete settlement, telling the girl that he needed to buy some car parts.
Kewa allegedly drove to a residence which he claimed belongs to his sister, stayed there till night where Kewa allegedly raped the girl in the car.
The next day, Kewa allegedly took the girl to Baruni and left her with another sister, who took the girl and left her at the Waigani bus stop.
She found her way home and informed her parents of what had happened.
