A 29-YEAR-OLD man was jailed 10 years for arson in East New Britain’s Gazelle.
Bingbing Taogo, 29, from Reimber-Livuan, was found guilty before Judge Frazer Pitpit in the National Court in Kokopo on Wednesday.
However, two years, one month and two days were deducted from the sentence for time he had spent in custody and will serve seven years, 10 months, three weeks and five days at the Kerevat Jail.
Judge Pitpit said the court preferred the state case as more corroborative, consistent and coherent to the simple, plain denial by Taogo.
He said the property was a dwelling house, substantially of permanent materials housing eight people at the time.
None of the occupants were in the house when it was set on fire and burned to ashes on Aug 10, 2016.
“You burnt to ashes the hard work, the sweat and the pain of Billy Kilala (victim) and his wife for a house valued to be about K24,000,” Judge Pitpit said.
“What you committed was a very serious crime and also you did not say sorry to the victim and his family for what you did.”
Judge Pitpit told Taogo that going through the facts of evidences, he noticed that he appeared to be a problem in the community.
He told Taogo that the crime was punishable by life imprisonment.
“Arson has become very prevalent in ENB and the country, and it is time this court becomes in-tune with how the good law abiding citizens are feeling,” he said.
According to the state facts of evidence, Kilala had a niece Roselyn doing Grade 10 at Materdei School at Tagitagi one ward in Gazelle’s Toma-Vunadidir LLG area and was living with him and the family.
Many times returning from school in the afternoon, Roselyn was harassed by Taogo, who used abusive language at her and as a result she began to get scared of him.
The court heard that on Aug 6, 2016, Taogo, while under the influence of liquor, had followed Roselyn to her house and chased her around, trying to grab hold of her.
