Shame to Papua New Guinea Government
PORT MORESBY: The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Government is
facing a shameful episode in which its civil servants may be locked out of
office tomorrow (Nov 1, 2022) because it failed to settle K74 million in rental
arrears for its office in the past few years.
Education Department
civil servants are unlikely to enter their offices today (Nov 1, 2022) after
the building owner locked the doors late yesterday (Oct 31, 2022) over K39
million in rental arrears.
Grand Columbia, which
owns buildings rented by some Government departments and agencies, said it had
been sending reminders to settle the K74 million in rental arrears, but without
success.

A COMPANY which owns buildings rented by some
Government departments and agencies says it had been sending reminders to
settle the K74 million in rental arrears, but without success.
Grand Columbia explained in a statement yesterday its decision to lock out
workers because of the rental arrears problem.
Departments and agencies locked out of their offices this year included the
National Statistical Office (NSO), Implementation and Rural Development
Department, Department of Petroleum and Energy (DPE) and the Government
Printing Office (GPO).
It requested the Government for any arrears settlement plan it has, but without
success.
It said the business relied on rental revenue.
“We have been investing in PNG for 30 years and continue to reinvest each
year,” he said.
He urged the Government to resolve the outstanding rental issue to keep the
department offices opened
