A COUNCILLOR and police have appointed 10 men to look after the Sabama bus stop and the market to ensure public safety, especially for the Kira Kira people.
Badili police station commander Inspector Obert Jerry said the market would remain closed as the villagers were still waiting for Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko (to turn up to mediate).
The unrest and tensions arose in Sabama in the National Capital District on Tuesday following a fight which was related to another fight on Monday.
Jerry said the councillor of Kira Kira village had led the villagers to block the road.
“The villagers want Tkatchenko to address their demands,” he added.
The fight on Monday was sparked by a drunk man from Southern Highlands who harassed a young girl from Kira Kira.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Gideon Ikumu said the girl was going to the market when she was harassed.
She then reported the incident to her father. The father then confronted the man, but was assaulted by the man and his friends. The Kira Kira residents then retaliated.
“Police arrested the man from Southern Highlands on Monday. Investigations then revealed that a young man from Kira Kira came to the aid of the girl’s father and was stabbed by one of the men from the other group,” he added.
Jerry said one of their (Kira Kira villagers) demands was that this man also be arrested. He said police were yet to arrest him. His identity is known.
“We are unable to look for him at the moment as the villagers keep obstructing with road blocks and fights,” he added.
“Police, the district administrator and Tkatchenko are to meet on how to reopen the market.
“No casualties were reported in yesterday’s incident.
“Police have been ordered to use force on anyone seen carrying weapons in Sabama,” Ikumu said.
