Metropolitan Supt Gideon Ikumu says NCD police have detained a Southern Highlands man over the ethnic clash at Sabama on Monday afternoon.
The fighting erupted between residents of Kira Kira village and other people living in the Sabama area.
Witnesses said people ran out onto the main road from Kira Kira and from the street near the Sabama Market, brandishing weapons and began throwing stones.
The fight started after a young woman from Kira Kira village was harassed by a man from Southern Highlands.
Ikumu said that the girl had reported this to her father who then tried to confront the perpetrator.
He said that the father of the girl was assaulted by drunks when he tried to confront the Southern Highlander.
“The Kira Kira villagers then came to the aid of the girl’s father,” he said.
A few witnesses said fighting broke out near the market.
“Rocks were thrown and some of us were chased just because we were standing nearby,” one of the witnesses said.
He said that when police showed up, both sides of the fight tried to fight with the police.
Ikumu said: “Police always encountered resistance from assailants and troublemakers.
“We have to overcome the resistance to make the arrest,” he said.
The fighting went on into the night and stopped at around 8pm when police were finally able to calm the situation and arrest the man responsible.
Ikumu said that the man, who harassed the girl, was the same man who was responsible for assaulting the father.
Sabama Market remains closed.
