AROUND 2,000 people are sleeping in makeshift shelters along the Okuk highway after being evicted from a 9-Mile squatter settlement in Lae, Morobe.
The eviction exercise, monitired by police, started last Friday following a court order obtained by a security firm which owns the piece of land.
Jacob Rawanigi, on behalf of the squatters, said they did not receive any notice.
“We were caught by surprise as a bulldozer escorted by police drove in and started destroying everything,” he said.
“We have been living here for over 40 years and have called it home.
“Many of us are working-class people.
“Children have missed school especially Grades 8, 10 and 12 sitting national exams. “We have nowhere to go from here.”
The families have set up temporary shelters along the 9-Mile road, or near the market, or near the bridge.
Attempts to get comments from the police and the named business house were unsuccessful.
Morobe Governor Luther Wenge has advised the provincial disaster office to get a record of the names, of those evicted and property lost.
