PRIME Minister James Marape says the authorities in Hela and police are doing their best to find Senior Constable Nelson Kalimda who went missing in Tari.
“I was informed of the incident when I was in Tari last weekend. The authorities are working closely with police to find Kalimda, a member of the Special Services Division 04 (SSD 04),” he said.
Hela Governor Philip Undialu has also pledged his support to help police continue the search for Kalimda who was last seen driving out of the guest house where he and his team were staying.
“I am told they were engaged by the Education Department to escort examination papers to Tari.
“However, the Hela police commander, administrator and authorities on the ground were not informed of this until after Kalimda was reported missing.
“His other team members told us that he drove out by himself from the guest house last Thursday and never returned.
“We will continue to help in the search and support police with manpower, logistics and funding until we find him or his vehicle,” he added.
Undialu said it was an unfortunate situation that had caught everyone by surprise.
He also called on the police to refrain from shooting at innocent people and shutting down Tari town, saying that this was not the way forward.
“We need to work together and we will need community support and cooperation to account for the missing person,” he added.
Undialu called on the people of Hela to join police and authorities in the search for Kalimda.
He appealed to his people to help locate the blue 10-seater LandCruiser that Kalimda was last seen driving.
“The SSD has always been there to support and help Hela over the years, maintaining peace and addressing law an order issues in our province.
“We know many of them by name as they know us.
“We have over the years built a good relationship with many of them and even with their family members.
“Many have come, many have stayed and some now call Hela their home,” he added.
Families at the Bomana Red Sea Police Barracks met with Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Operations) Donald Yamasombi and expressed their disappointment at the manner in which information on Kalimda’s disappearance was reaching the family.
He told them: “We have deployed the special services director Julius Tasion and assistant commissioner of police, operations, Samson Kua with another batch of SSD personnel into the highlands to expand the search.
“Whatever findings we receive will enable us to come forward to give a response to you all.
“We also are in a state of confusion, it would not be good if we give answers based on assumptions.”
