A MAN believed to be a gang member of the late
Tommy Baker was killed during a police raid at Mutuyuwa village in Milne Bay on
Oct 16, say police.
Milne Bay police commander Superintendent Peter Barkie said Suti Hape was
buried on Thursday.
He was shot on both legs by police to prevent him from running away.
“He was rushed to Milne Bay General Hospital by the officers to seek treatment
but died,” he said.
“According to the doctor’s report, he died from gunshot wounds.”
Barkie said Hape had escaped from prison in 2020 and was on the run until
police received tips about his location.
“We told the Mutuyuwa councillor to tell Hape to surrender but he refused.”
He said Hape refused to surrender because he wanted to avenge the death of his
wife and unborn child.
“Police got a tip-off that a group of people were having a military like camp
at the foot of a mountain.
“It is alleged that his wife, another woman and few men were practising how to
use fire-arms, fight and other military skills.”
“When his wife and unborn child were killed, this made him mad and he refused
surrender to the police.”
Barkie said the police had done all they could to have surrender.
“His brother was also in jail and we thought that if we released his brother,
he would surrender.
“His brother’s release was upon trust that once he got out he would not commit
any crime.”
Barkie said even after his brother was released, Hape did not surrender.
“When he died, the relatives accepted his death and relatives requested police
to take his body to Mutuyuwa,” he said.
