EIGHTEEN people died in Tsak Valley, Enga, after a fight between two tribes over a piece of land spilled into the valley.
Enga police commander acting Supt Ephenes Nili told The National that the fight was between the Palinu and Yambalikin tribes.
“The fight started over a piece of land. (It) claimed 18 lives, (with) 20 homes destroyed.
“Police and soldiers have been deployed into the area and have (set up) camp between the two tribes at the Tsak Valley High School.”
A/Supt Nili said the soldiers and police were protecting State assets including the school.
“The situation is tense but the personnel continue to keep watch on the two tribes,” he said.
An order will be issued on Tuesday next week to stop the tribes from engaging in further fights, with dates set for them to comply with the order.
A/Supt Nili said fighting over land, pigs and women must stop.
“A tribal fight does not (provide) any benefits to anyone,” he said.
Police are investigating the fight and community leaders and hired hands will be arrested, he added.
“It’s time police step in and pick up the leaders who continue to allow the tribal fights to continue.”
An awareness is being carried out to ensure that both tribes lay down arms, he said.
