POLICE have resorted to the use of a helicopter in the hope to fast
track the capture of cult members who are on the run for kidnappings, murders
and robberies.
Northern ACP Peter Guinness said instead of having to trek for up to five hours
to get from village to village in Rai Coast’s Nayudo local level government in
Madang, “a helicopter is airlifting heavily armed policemen in the manhunt”.
“The rugged terrain of the locations of the villages where the cult killers are
hiding is making it more difficult for us in the manhunt.
“The wet weather is also making travelling a slippery affair.
“We need to be fast to have any chance of capturing any of the cult killers,”
he added.
ACP Guinness said the Manalos Aviation in Lae was supporting the police manhunt
voluntarily without any charges to airlift the 10 Northern Mobile Group
policemen to Mibu village to join another 11 counterparts from Madang.
“We need more support from all levels of government and the police hierarchy to
support the operation,” he added.
He said the New Tribes missionaries had supported the police in the search for
the cult killers.
“The people need our support now.
“We cannot just sit and expect good results from the policemen deployed for the
manhunt.
“We need support to end this operation against the cult killers so that the
2022 general election will be a peaceful one in Nankina Valley,” he stressed.
ACP Guinness said: “There are fewer than 10 policemen in Rai Coast which is the
cause of the security problem.
“The lack of police presence had emboldened the cults to terrorise villagers,
kidnapping, murdering and robbing.
“The Government must support the police.
“If policemen can be deployed elsewhere to restore law and order, the same must
be extended to the people of Rai Coast.
“Policing is a collective effort from everyone.
“We have our limits, so we cannot do this alone without the cooperation from
everyone.”
