DESCRIBING it as a “worse kind of murder”, Justice John Kaumi jailed a
34-year-old woman 25 years for burning a woman alive this year.
Justice Kaumi, in the National Court in Mt Hagen on Monday, said although Mary
Peter had pleaded guilty, “the offence she committed is a worse kind of
murder”.
Peter, from Lai Valley’s Isa village in Mendi, Southern Highlands, admitted
murdering her husband’s second wife.
Peter, in company of two of her friends on Feb 1, assaulted the victim in her
house.
They were walking from Perens village in Lai valley to their village after
attending a bride price.
On their way, they had to pass the victim’s house which was once used to be
Peter’s house.
Peter, including her two friends, went into the house and found the victim
sitting with a small girl.
The three women then attacked the victim and left her in the house injured
while the small girl ran out.
Peter then locked the victim in the house while she was still alive and burned
the house.
The victim was injured and could not flee.
Her remains were collected and taken to Mendi hospital for a post-mortem.
Justice Kaumi said Peter was to serve her sentence with hard labour as a
deterrent to others.
