POLICE in Madang rescued a family kidnapped by a group and returned them to their home village on Wednesday.
Provincial police commander Acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said officers travelling to Rai Coast in search of a cult group came across a man, wife and their two children held captive in a house.
They told police that they were kidnapped by the Hetwara cult group last week who demanded money and valuables from the relatives for their release.
Supt Rubiang said officers were tipped off on the location of the family.
They went to the area at night and rescued the family.
The man was airlifted to Madang and is now seeking treatment at the Modilon Hospital.
He said it was a risky operation as the cult members were armed and had attacked an officer.
One cult member was shot dead while the others fled, he said.
Rubiang said the cult group was operating in Nankina valley robbing and kidnapping villagers, burning houses and killing people.
There are currently 21 police officers in Rai Coast but the problem they face is the lack of roads.
He thanked the businesses and individuals who supported police in carrying out the rescue operation.
They provided food and logistical support.
