POLICE have arrested and charged the 24-year-old daughter-in-law of a politician with the brutal assault of a 30-year-old woman on Nov 30.
The wife, who is the daughter-in-law of a prominent member of parliament, was arrested in Gerehu Stage 2 and taken to the police headquarters for questioning over allegations of deprivation of liberty, robbery, threatening to kill and causing bodily harm.
Police Comm David Manning confirmed the arrest and charging of the wife who is from Ambum’s Kupin Kem village in Enga.
The family of the victim told The National that they were pleased with the police investigations so far.
“We will follow through with the case. We want all women out there who have faced such situations to know that the law is there, you need to have the courage to follow through with your case,” a family spokesman said.
“We are fighting this case for all other women facing such problem.”
The assault is believed to have been caused by the wife who suspected the victim was having an affair with her husband.
Comm Manning said the courage of the victim to tell her story is “commendable”. “The attack, details of the attack, is horrendous,” he said.
“No woman should go through such an ordeal.
“She still had the strength to tell her story through her pain, sat and spoke to police investigators.
“As I have said before, regardless of your status in society, a crime is a crime and you will be dealt with by the police. I want to reiterate that if you have a complaint, take it to the nearest police station to be dealt with.
“You cannot dishing out your own justice on another person.
“Once you decide to take the law into your own hands, you will only face more problems.”
The victim, Samantha (not her real name), was abducted, assaulted and sexually attacked in a car driven by the woman from 9am to 1pm.
