A GRADE 9 student was killed in the early hours of yesterday, allegedly
by some drunk men suspecting him of practising sorcery.
The student, identified as Melton Sasingian, 20, of Yekimbole 1 village in
Yangoru, East Sepik, was murdered with what was believed to be a knife.
His throat was sliced. Tangori police led by Sgt Moses Pilai, arrested three
suspects in relation to the killing.
They are in police custody.
Sgt Pilai said the suspects were from Harua village and names of 10 other
suspects were provided as well.
He said both sides were involved in drinking, resulting in the youth’s throat
being cut. “Homebrew is a major contributor of law and order issues in the
communities and district,” Sgt Pilai said.
“I want the families to let the law deal with this case and do not retaliate or
do things that will get you in trouble.”
The deceased’s elder brother, Werenguma, said the suspects were drinking
homebrew at the Hagama fish market. One of the suspects, Thomson Nevieng,
suspected Melton of practising sorcery and killing his cousin.
Werenguma said his brother went home and the suspects sat at a junction and
watched him.
“When he went down the road, they took him, sliced his throat in front of his
house, left him and escaped,” he alleged.
“Police must hold them and deal with them.
“The main suspect must be held and dealt with.
“It’s an inhuman killing.
“They are from another village and came to our village and killed my brother,
which is totally uncalled for.
“They left a huge hole in our hearts.”
