A POLICE officer in Banz, Jiwaka, escaped death at the hands of a woman-led gang who tried to shoot him while he was responding to their robbery attempt at a hardware shop just metres from the Banz Police Station.
Station commander Insp James Rumi told The National that he was standing at the station gate and saw the fleeing vehicle.
A gun was pointed at him and a colleague but several shots fired missed them.
“By the grace of God I was saved,” Insp Rumi said.
In the robbery attempt on Tuesday at 9am, four men and a woman walked into the Banz Hardware shop and attempted to rob the owner and staff.
“A female employee in the shop was injured as they made their way in, they then forced a Chinese supervisor to take them to where the safe was, unbeknown to them that the owner of the shop was a licensed firearm holder and he saw what was happening,” Insp Rumi said.
“He fired several warning shots into the roof of the shop and forced the armed robbers to flee.
“They slashed the Chinese man and fled the shop.
“They jumped into the parked vehicle and fled the scene as policemen ran to the shop.
“Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle but were unable to do so as the area was crowded with venders selling on the side of the road and, in particular, in front of the station. When they drove past the station, they saw me standing there, that’s when they fired at me and another officer.
“We managed to duck and maybe because of the moving vehicle, they were unable to aim properly.
“We walked away without a scratch.”
The people set up road blocks to stop the gang but they went away.
