Marape elected PM for second term, another woman MP for 11th Parliament

PORT MORESBY: Tari-Pori MP James Marape was elected as Papua New Guinea (PNG) prime minister for a second term by 97 MPs present in the 118-seat 11th Parliament yesterday.

The MPs included 12 whose General Election 2022 (GE22) writs were returned after the 4pm Aug 5 deadline for the return of writs.

Of the 33 seats that failed to meet the deadline, 22 seats have yet to return their GE22 writs (See below stats for details).

People’s First Party’s Kessy Sawang was the second woman whoi made it to Parliament after winning in Madang’s Rai Coast.

She edged incumbent and Mining Vice Minister Peter Sapia (United Labour Party) to runner-up with a 735-vote margin win in a seat contested by 54 candidates.

The first woman to book a seat in Parliament was People’s National Congress’ Rufina Peter who ousted incumbent and former Central governor Robert Agarobe.
