THE people of Madang
have voted out Peter Yama as their governor, replacing him with young lawyer
Ramsey Pariwa, who immediately offered his predecessor an olive branch to work
together for their people.
“I am now extending my hand to you (Yama) to work with me for the betterment of
our province,” Pariwa said.
Yama, the People’s Labour Party three-term MP, was eliminated in the 34th
exclusion count yesterday.
People First Party’s Pariwa was declared the winner when he went past the
absolute majority with 109,888 votes.
Pangu Pati member Jerry Singirok was runner-up with 65,128 votes, followed by
Benny Panti of the Allegiance Party with 41,764.
Yama, who served as governor for one term, and as MP for Sumkar and
Usino-Bundi, was seeking his fourth term in Parliament.
Yama, 66, told The National in June, that it would be last
term in Parliament if he won this year.
Yama was first elected to the 5th Parliament for the Sumkar Open seat in a
by-election in 1992, but lost the seat in 1997 election.
In 2002, he won the Bundi Open seat but lost it in 2007.
He was out of politics until 2017 when he was re-elected to the 10th Parliament
as the Madang governor.
Pariwa yesterday thanked Yama for his leadership in Madang over the years.
He also urged the six Madang MPs to work with him in developing Madang and
improving living standards.
Pariwa plans to set up an independent body in the next three months to look
into provincial funds, review the provincial plan and commission a new
development plan for the province.
He also plans to commission a public service structure which promotes effective
service delivery for the people.
“Public servants, wake up because you will be in the spotlight,” he said.
Assistant provincial returning officer Albert Ului said the contest for the Madang
regional seat was fair compared to past elections.
Ului thanked security personnel for keeping the counting center safe and
secure.
He also thanked the scrutineers for their cooperation and the counting
officials for their dedication.
