Pangu leads with 35 MPs, Marape to be invited to form Government tomorrow
PORT MORESBY: With 92 of the 118 seats declared
(including those declared after 4pm Aug 5, 2022 - the deadline for the return
of General Election 2022 (GE22) writs), Pangu Pati is in a commanding lead with
35 seats.
It is the party with the
most seats in GE22 and Pangu leader and Prime Minister James Marape is likely
to be invited to form the new Government tomorrow (Aug 9, 2022).
The 118-seat 11th
Parliament’s maiden meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (Aug 9, 2022) and Marape
is expected to be elected as Papua New Guinea (PNG)’s chief executive for the
next five years.
However, PNG
Solicitor-General Tauvasa Tanuvasa said only 85 MPs, whose GE22 writs were
returned by 4pm on Friday (Aug 5, 2022), would be allowed to attend the meeting
in Parliament.
The status of those,
whose writs were returned after the deadline, are thus in limbo as the ballot
counts in 33 seats continue, as ordered by Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai
who on Friday (Aug 5, 2022) claimed that he was invoking his powers to extend
the deadline for the return of writs for a third time.
Trailing Pangu with 14
seats is People’s National Congress (PNC) which is led by former premier Peter
O’Neill, followed by United Resources Party (URP) with 10 and National Alliance
(NA) with five (see The National’s listing
of GE22 WINNERS below for details).
A woman and two
Independents have also won since Friday (Aug 5, 2022).
PNC’s Rufina Peter is
the first woman to win a seat in GE22 . She toppled incumbent Governor Robert
Agarobe in Central but her return of writ was made after the deadline.
The two Independents who
won are Maso Karipe in the new Porgera-Paiela seat in Enga, and Benjamin Ngents
Mul in Jiwaka’s North Waghi.
