THREE policemen were arrested for trying to smuggle 450kg of marijuana and two unregistered firearms in the National Capital District last week.
Gulf commander Jeffrey Lemb said the trio were arrested at a roadblock set up near the Apanaipi Bridge on the Hiritano Highway following a tip-off.
“They were caught at the Ipakota market,” he said.
“One suspect is a cop attached to Central and the other two were reservists.
“They were in a white LandCruiser belonging to Bereina police.
“The three were taken out of the vehicle, stripped of their uniform and taken into police custody in Kerema police station. We found 15 bags of marijuana, each weighing 10kg, and another 10 bags each weighing 5kg.
“Two unregistered firearms were also found in the car.”
Lemb said the trio had been charged with possession of dangerous drugs and that they will also be referred to the Police Internal Unit for further disciplinary charges.
In another case, a 15-year-old girl from Eastern Highlands’ Marawaka was arrested for having marijuana.
Lemb said police believed the girl was part of a group that had smuggled marijuana into Gulf from Goroka, and was related to the 450kg of marijuana case.
Police are still investigating.
