CARDIOLOGIST Professor Isi Kevau yesterday warned Members of Parliament (MPs) that betel nut chewing is lethal.
“Chewing betel nut with lime and mustard can cause heart attacks as lime contains a harmful substance that blocks the flow of blood to the heart.
“When you chew betel nut with lime, you will feel a burning sensation in your chest,” Prof Kevau said.
Kevau, who is Sir Buri Kidu Heart Foundation director, spoke at an induction programme yesterday for newly-elected MPs.
Kevau said the first heart attack case in Papua New Guinea happened in 1972.
“The number of heart attack cases have grown immensely,” he said.
“Therefore, we need to practice healthy living and lifestyle to suppress it.”
The discussion led to a question and answer session as MPs wanted to know how to avoid heart attacks. North Wahgi MP Benjamin Mul asked what was needed to keep healthy and avoid getting heart attacks.
“To avoid heart attacks, frequently do (medical and health) check-ups, maintain a vegetable diet and avoid chewing betel nut with mustard and lime,” Kevau said.
