A FATHER who allegedly stabbed his two sons to death in Port Moresby last year was referred to Laloki Psychiatry Hospital for mental treatment.
Acting judge Laura Wawun-Kuvi at Waigani National Court yesterday referred Dave Benjamin Gau, 29, of Wosera Gawi’s Tigawi Niaura village, to see psychiatrist (mental doctor) for mental examination following Gau’s application through his lawyer.
Gau’s lawyer Obadiah Himore said Gau was having trouble understanding instruction when he consulted him to file pre-trial review statement.
State did not make any objections to the application.
Wawun-Kuvi then ordered for Correctional Service officers to take Gau to consult a mental doctor.
She said: “State must obtain the report from whoever the doctor Gau will consult and bring it to court on Aug 29.
“If in the case that a physiatrist (mental doctor) is not available between now and Aug 29, State can find out when the doctor will be available and inform the court on when Gau will be expected to return to court.”
Meanwhile, Gau was taken back to Bomana prison and would be transferred to Laloki Psychiatry Hospital upon receiving the court’s order.
Gau was committed by the Waigani committal court on May 31 to be tried in the National Court after finding enough evidence on police file.
In the morning of April 21, Gau left his wife and two sons (aged five and two-years-four-months) in Morata where they lived and went to work. During the day, Gau allegedly started an argument with his wife on WhatsApp.
The wife came back to the room and found Gau allegedly stabbing the younger son who was lying next to their older son’s dead body.
