Dad to stand trial for killing sons aged two and five in Morata

PORT MORESBY: The 29-year-old man who allegedly slashed to death his two sons (aged two and five) in Port Moiresby’s Morata last year is to stand trial in the National Court for murder.

Magistrate Paul Puri Nii in a committal court in Waigani yesterday (May 31, 2022) said there was sufficient evidence to make a serious case against Dave Benjamin Gau, from Wosera-Gawi’s Tigawi village in East Sepik.

“There is overwhelming evidence that Gau murdered his sons in Morata on April 27.

“The police evidence has shown that Gau has a case to answer in the National Court,” he added.

A 29-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly killed his two sons in Port Moresby last year has been committed to stand trial for wilful murder in the National Court.
Magistrate Paul Puri Nii presiding in the Committal Court in Waigani yesterday said there was sufficient evidence to make a serious case against Dave Benjamin Gau of Tigawi village in Wosera-Gawi, East Sepik.
“There is overwhelming evidence that Gau murdered his sons, one a five-year-old and the other a two-year-old at Morata on April 27, 2021,” Nii said.
“The police evidence has shown that Gau has a case to answer in the National Court.”
Nii said he had gone through the evidence and noted that Gau have been having problems with his wife since they married in 2014.
“I am satisfied that Gau had a motive to do something bad to his wife and to his sons.”
Nii said Gau had taken out his frustrations with his marriage on his innocent and defenceless sons.
“Gau dragged his marital problems onto his innocent sons who knew nothing nor were a party to the issues and cruelly moved to harm the babies and their mother,” he said.
Nii added that there was evidence of regular violence in the home since Gau and his family moved to Morata in January 2021 before the stabbing death of the two children on April 27, 2021.
“This shows that Gau had been living with anger against his family including the late sons,” he said.
Police alleged that on April 27, 2021, Gau had an argument with his wife, blamed his sons for his laptop charger and later stabbed them to death.
Gau at that time was employed with Digitec and his wife was working with United State embassy.
Gau had also allegedly tried to kill himself after he murdered his sons but the neighbours disarmed him.
The police file was served to Gau Oct 4, 2021, and the matter was subsequently adjourned for a defence submission on the police evidence. On April 11, the arresting officer told the court that police file was served on the defendant through the CIS officials as the defendant had been remanded.
Gau had also applied to court to be transferred from Bomana prison to the Laloki Psychiatric Centre claiming mental health issues.
The application was refused on the grounds that a mentally affected person would not be aware of his/her affliction and any disorder could only be diagnosed by a competent professional.
