Man to be trialed for allegedly molesting his two granddaughters

PORT MORESBY: A committal court in Waigani has committed a 54-year-old grandfather to stand trial in the National Court for allegedly molesting his two granddaughters in Port Moresby four years ago.

Magistrate Paul Puri Nii said there was sufficient evidence that they were sexually abused by their grandfather between 2016 and 2019.

“The victims were then aged 12 and 13 when they gave the evidence and thus they gave true account of what they experienced.

“The victims’ statements gave clear and uniform accounts of what had allegedly transpired that gave rise to the current allegations,” he added.

COMMITTAL Court in Waigani has ruled that there is sufficient evidence to commit a man, 54, to a trial for allegedly molesting his two granddaughters in Port Moresby four years ago.
Magistrate Paul Puri Nii said after going through the victims’ statements, there was evidence that they were sexually abused by their grandfather between 2016 and 2019.
“The victims were 12 years old and 13 years old when they gave the evidence and thus they gave true account of what they experienced.
“The victims’ statements gave clear and uniform accounts of what had allegedly transpired that gave rise to the current allegations,” he said. Magistrate Nii said evidence showed that one of the victims was intimidated when engaged with her aunties in early sex and pregnancy conversation.
“I am satisfied that she was hurt by what she had been through and hence she avoided the meeting,” Nii said.
“Her body language during that conversation was a direct indication of the abuse she went through,” he added.
Police alleged that in 2015, the grandfather was living with the victims’ family at Rainbow, was related to them through the victims’ mother, and allegedly started abusing them.
It was alleged that the victims were eight years and nine years old respectively at that time.
During that time up to December 2019, the grandfather allegedly on several occasions called the victims into a small house close to their main house, bought them candies, gave them money and allegedly touched them sexually.
In 2020, the victims’ mother and aunty allegedly noticed that something was wrong with the victims, the victims told them everything when they asked.
Victims’ parents reported the matter and the grandfather was arrested.
The matter will return on Thursday for the grandfather’s declaration statement.
