Woman hacked to death in Madang

PORT MORESBY: A woman was hacked to death in a fight between street vendors and employees of a fuel station in Madang town yesterday (May 24, 2022), commander Acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang says.

“The fight broke out because the station’s security gurad was stoned in the morning while trying to stop a bag snatch from the vendors at the main market.

“The guard then mobilized his colleagues and they returned armed with bush knives and took revenge, resulting in the killing of the woman,” he added.

A WOMAN was hacked to death in a fight between street vendors and employees of a fuel station in Madang town yesterday, commander acting superintendent Mazuc Rubiang says.
“The fight broke out because the station’s security guard was stoned in the morning while trying to stop a bag snatch from the vendors at the main market.
“The guard then mobilised his colleagues and they returned armed with bush knives and took revenge, resulting in the killing of the woman,” he added.
Rubiang said the woman was from Rai Coast’s Bugatti arrived in the morning to sell her produce.
“She was rushed to the Modilon General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival,” he said.
Rubiang said police had arrested six suspects, including the main suspect who killed the woman.
“The suspects are all believed to be from Enga. The situation was very tense this morning with businesses locking up for safety,” he added.
Rubiang said police had the situation under control and appealed to the public not to panic or fear for their safety. He said supporters and 2022 general election hopefuls were cleared to come to town to file their nomination papers with tight police surveillance for the next few days.
