A GUN-WIELDING robber was shot dead by police at Bumbu market in Lae on Saturday, commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban says.
“The robber pointed his homemade gun at policemen who then shot him,” he added.
Kunyanban said youths from nearby settlements at Bummbu’s 13A Market emerged from bushes between 6pm and 8pm and started harassing the public walking between Butibam village and China Town.
“The youths snatched away bags, phones and other valuable items from bystanders.
“They then tried to hijack two passing vehicles.
“Policemen were alerted of the disturbance and as they rushed to the scene, a youth pointed (the gun).
“In self-defence, a policeman drew his pistol and shot the youth,” he added.
“The others then fled the scene. We have identified a suspect who is now on the run and is believed to be the gang leader. We are also trying to identify the other youths involved in the robberies,” he added.
