TWO suspects were arrested by police on Thursday afternoon at Voco Point in Lae, Morobe, with more than K30,000 in cash after a tip off.
Lae Metropolitan Command Senior Inspector James Luan said when police arrested the two men, they found that one had over K30,000 cash in his possession.
Luan said they suspected that the money was meant for something illegal.
“We do not know what they were trying to do with the money but they might have a hidden motive to use this money which may be illegal,” Luan said.
He said the suspects in possession of such huge amounts of cash may be there to purchase a weapon or carry out other illegal activities. The two suspects are in custody and police are interrogating them.
He said charges would be laid once investigation was completed.
“As we are moving into the general election, a large amount of money in cash will be in the hands of people.
“Some may have that in their possession for a genuine purpose while others may try to use such amount of money for illegal activities. Police are alert as we are moving to the issuing of writs and the beginning of the general election,” he said.
“If we happen to come across such situation, we will not hesitate to arrest and charge any members of the public going around with huge amount of money,” he said.
Luan said the public must report such cases.
