A 20-YEAR-old women accused of killing her boyfriend three years ago in Port Moresby pleaded not guilty in the Waigani National Court on Thursday.
Lindsay Takiabut, of Hela, when giving sworn evidence, said Samuel Joseph Pumai, 23 and an economist, stabbed himself with a knife he was holding when she pushed him.
“Pumai was holding the knife when I pushed him which he hit the wall and stabbed himself,” she said.
“He got the knife in the kitchen and was threatening me to stop arguing with the other girl Pumai was with that day,” she said.
Takiabut said she was not holding the knife when asked by her lawyer Malcolm Sumbuk from Public Solicitor’s Office whether she held the knife that time.
“I was emotional when I saw my engaged boyfriend in the room with another girl in my parents’ rental house,” she said.
Pumai that time was renting a unit from Lindsay’s parents and was working for the Department of Treasury.
Takiabut said on Nov 24, 2019 she went to a barbecue with friends and got a call from Pumai telling her to come to the rent house and get her gift which he had brought from Fiji.
“I went there after the barbecue, saw his brother and other boys drinking alcohol and asked them about Pumai and they said he went out,” she added. Takiabut said that she saw his shoes were at the door and wanted to go in and look for him but the boys kept saying he was not inside so she left.
“As I was heading towards the gate, I heard voices coming from the room so I went back and there I saw Pumai with the other girl in the room.
“I was in shock and called him and he came out with (in) his shorts and said he would explain but I refused, telling him that there was nothing to explain,” she said.
She said she told Pumai to call his family and the church pastor to come and they would sort it out and she went to her aunt’s house at Tokarara.
“I told him to call the pastor because Pumai and I were engaged in the church and were getting counselling from the pastor in preparation for our marriage,” she added.
After few hours, Takaibut went back with two of her aunties to see Pumai.
“To my surprise, the girl was still there so I was emotional and started to argue with her and Pumai.
“Pumai picked up a knife in the kitchen and was threatening me to stop and was moving closer to me.
“So I pushed him and he hit his side on the wall and stabbed himself with the knife in his hand.
“I (got a) shock when I saw blood coming out from his chest and ran out to the neighbour’s house.”
The matter will return on May 24 for submission on the verdict.
