3 suspected cop killers nabbed, charged

PORT MORESBY: Police have arrested and charged three suspects with the killing of a policeman in Jiwaka on Nov 12, 2022.

Crime director Joel Simatab said the suspects, all security guards employed by a club in Banz, were part of a six-men group believed to ahave been involved in the murder.

Simatab said the policeman was on patrol in the vicinity of the club on the night he was killed.

“The policeman was believed to be drunk and disorderly, and was misbehaving in the pokies area,” he added.

POLICE have arrested and charged three suspects for the killing of a policeman in Jiwaka on Nov 12.
Crimes director Joel Simatab said the suspects, all security guards employed by a club in Banz, were part of a six-men group believed to have been involved in the murder.
Simatab said the policeman was on patrol in the vicinity of the club on the night he was killed.
“The policeman was believed to be drunk and disorderly, and was misbehaving in the pokies area.
“The suspects were able to get him out of the club and asked him to go home.
“But, during the confrontation, the three suspects stabbed and seized a police rifle from the policeman,” he added.
Simatab said the policeman collapsed in the club’s premises.
The policeman was rushed to Kundjip Nazarene Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“Deputy Police Commander Operations Anton Billie put together a team of detectives from Port Moresby, Western Highlands and Chimbu to investigate the murder.
“The policemen were sent to Jiwaka to investigate, arrest and lay possible criminal charges on suspects involved in the killing.
The investigators were able to identify several suspects.
“The three suspects were arrested by detectives and charged with one count each for murder and are awaiting to appear in court today in Mt Hagen,” he said.
