A 32-YEAR-OLD Chinese national was fined K10,000 in default a year’s jail by a district court for trafficking in 0.9kg of Methamphetamine (meth) packed in Christmas balls in Port Moresby last month.
Magistrate Billy Pidu in Waigani on Friday fined Chen Jing, from Hankou village in Fujian, China, after he pleaded guilty as charged.
Pidu said Chen would return to court and serve a year in prison if he failed to pay the fine and ordered for his passport to be handed to the court clerk.
He said Chen, upon paying the fine, would be placed on one-year good behaviour bond and to report to the court clerk two times a month.
Pidu further ordered that if in the case where Chen needed his passport, he must seek the court’s permission and also not to leave the National Capital District without the court’s permission.
On Dec 9, Chen went to Fedex freight company at Seven-Mile to send a box containing Christmas balls to Australia.
However, the box was offloaded and kept in Fedex office because Chen did not have a tax identification number.
On Dec 15, the Fedex management was suspicious about the box and put it through their scanner.
The management then called the police drug squad in for investigation.
The box was taken to the Badili Drug Squad Office for examination.
Police alleged that the box contained 100 Christmas balls.
They opened the balls and 43 were packed with methamphetamine and glued back as normal.
On Dec 19, Chen went back to Fedex to confirm if his box was sent to Australia.
Fedex then called the police.
Police arrested Chen and charged him under the Controlled Substance Act 2021.
