POLICE have rescued the family members of a man who were taken hostage after a fatal car-pedestrian accident in Markham’s Zumin on Sunday.
Morobe commander Chief Insp Daviaga said a police patrol unit at the accident scene had proceeded to rescue the family members of the driver of the car.
“They are now safe and sound,” he said.
The family members were taken hostage by relatives of the two pedestrians who were knocked down and killed in the accident.
Daviaga said the driver was arrested yesterday and would be charged accordingly.
According to police reports, the driver accidently knocked down the two pedestrians (a man and a woman) on the road side, killing them on the spot.
The families and relatives of the deceased then captured the family members of the driver and took them as hostages. Daviaga said police were sent to the accident scene and were able to negotiate with the locals for the release of the hostages.
Police did not confirm the number of individuals in the family.
Daviaga said the accident was recorded as the first major incident that happened after Christmas and New Year’s Eve in the province.
Meanwhile, police reported that motorists could now travel freely along the highway as they had cleared the road and asked the locals to refrain from causing any inconvenience to road users.
