POLICE have recovered three bodies after a boat ferrying passengers from Wewak to Madang went missing on Tuesday.
It has not been determined how many passengers altogether were in the boat.
The bodies found at sea were taken to Boram Hospital.
Boram Hospital mortuary spokesman Albert Kingu said the bodies were of two women from East Sepik (one from Yangoru and the other from Maprik) and a man from Madang’s Usino Bundi.
One of the dead was the wife of former police prosecutor Henry Suamani who lives in the Tarangu police barracks.
Suamani said his wife, a grandson and two others got on the boat at Kreer Market for Madang at about noon on Tuesday.
He said the last time he called, his wife confirmed that they were already on the boat.
“(But) I am not sure how many boarded the boat,” Suamani said.
“I am not sure if they were killed by pirates or that their boat capsized.
“I am lost for words now because I have lost two family members.”
Madang police commander Superintendent David Seine Jr and East Sepik commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari said both Wewak and Madang police were investigating the case. In Morobe, authorities have called on boat owners and captains needed to heed warnings from the weather service authorities and make decisions based on the safety of passengers.
Deputy Police Commissioner Donald Yamasombi last month said Water Police had extended their operation to cover other provinces.
He said over Christmas and New Year Water Police would provide more manpower to take control of crime and ensure people were safe in the city.
Director Water Police Chris Smith said they had slowly closed off the 15 maritime provinces in the country that covered 5.2sqkm along the coast lines.
