KANDEP MP Don Polye says the rape of a 21-year-old Australian female tourist at gunpoint in Kavieng has damaged the image of the province and country.
“It is sending a wrong signal on the province, a tourism hub,” the Higher Education Minister said in a media statement.
“Australia is a good old friend of PNG (Papua New Guinea) and such treatment by bad apples in the community can erode our people-to-people relationship,” he said, adding that Australia was a major contributor to the tourism industry.
Polye said the Government was serious in addressing lawlessness in the country and thus welcomed the provincial government’s position to effect the Vagrancy Act against the trouble makers.
He said the Government, through police and Internal Security Ministry, was increasing police manpower and funding other capacity issues.
