SEVEN people are dead in an ongoing tribal fight over a stolen pig in Jiwaka’s North Waghi.
The fighting started on Jan 1 between the Wika and Waka tribes in Nondugl after the Waka tribe accused the Wika for stealing a pig during a New Year celebration.
Attempts to get police comments on the deadly clashes failed.
According to a witness who did not wish to be identified for safety reasons, the Waka tribe demanded compensation for the stolen pig.
However, they were allegedly attacked by the Wika tribe who allegedly killed a man from Waka.
“The Waka tribe waited for the intervention of police, the governor and MP to react quickly to resolve the matter and arrest the killers.
“A lack of attention from the leaders and authorities resulted in an outbreak of fighting, loss of more lives and properties,” the witness said.
“Please, we are calling on the provincial government, police and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF), through the social media, and now mainstream, to take immediate action and send in reinforcement to end this tribal war and restore peace”, he added.
Concerned family members from neighbouring villages are requesting their leaders like North Waghi MP Benjamin Mul and the police, including PNGDF, to intervene and stop the bloodshed before more lives and properties are lost.
They said if the provincial government and Mul continue to turn a blind eye on the tribal fight, it might spill over to other nearby villages.
