A CENTRAL committal
court has ruled that there is not enough evidence against two women and a man
charged with causing the death of a 10-month-old baby girl in Central in 2020.
Magistrate Alex Kalandi yesterday ruled that police did not meet the required
elements of the charge laid against Molly Toroga, 32, Karaka Oga, 27, and Jonah
Oga, 57, all from Hiri.
The court then struck out the case and discharged Molly, Karaka and Jonah from
custody.
Police alleged that on Sept 1, 2020, between 8am and 9am at Bausaka Island in
the Sirinumu Dam area, Molly and the deceased baby, the child of the
complainant Philip Camilus and the mother Karaka were run over by a dinghy.
It was alleged that Molly and Karaka, with the baby, had got on the dinghy
belonging to Jonah and went fishing.
They did not catch any fish so Molly and Karaka moved to another location.
The outboard motor was started and the thrust of the dinghy speeding threw them
off the boat.
The dinghy spun back and went over the baby, with the propeller slashing the
baby on the head and face, causing serious injuries.
The baby was later rushed to the Sogeri Health Centre and referred to Port
Moresby General Hospital for further medical attention but died on the way.
All three adults were charged.
