TWO people were killed in a car-pedestrian accident and the family of the driver of the car were taken hostage by relatives of the dead in Morobe early yesterday.
Acting Commander Chief Insp John Daviaga said police had arrested the driver for the accident but the relatives of the deceased must not hold anyone hostage.
He said a family travelling into Lae from the Highlands when the driver knocked down a man and a woman on Zumim Bridge, part of the Highlands Highway in Markham, killing both pedestrians.
“The relatives of the two killed then captured the family of the driver and held them as hostages.
“This is an accident and the family of the deceased persons must not hold the family hostage,” he said. Police from the rural patrol unit have gone to the accident scene yesterday to negotiate with the families of the deceased persons to release the family members of the driver.
“The locals have to release the family members to police.
“Police will use all means to ensure the family members are safe if the locals are reluctant to release them as ordered.
“Anything, such as compensation demands for the deceased persons can be negotiated for when the matter comes before court.
“All I want now is for the family to be safely released as police have already arrewsted the driver,” he added.
The bodies of the accident victims are now in Angau General Hospital’s mortuary.
Daviaga said people living along the main Highlands Highway had to take precautions at all times when walking along the highway as passing vehicles “may come at high speeds”.
“Motorists traveling that part of the highway had to take extra care as the situation is a bit tense at the moment.
“We are monitoring the situation and any thoughts of blocking parts of the highway will be treated as unlawful,” he added.
